ChatGPT just quietly rolled out Apps and the hype around them is something to behold, but here's the truth that no one is telling you...
If you already know how to communicate clearly with AI, the new ChatGPT Apps are probably unimpressive.
I've been using them.
They don't really do much.
They won't replace good prompting.
They won't magically run your business.
But they are useful for one very specific reason:
They show people what "good AI usage" looks like.
Let me give you a concrete example.
The Gmail App
Most business owners use ChatGPT like this:
"Help me write an email."
That's vague. And the output usually shows it.
The Gmail App, on the other hand, already knows:
- who the email is going to
- the context of the thread
- what tone is appropriate
- what a "finished" email should look like
So instead of guessing what to ask, you start with structure.
You see: "Oh, this is the level of specificity AI actually needs."
That alone is valuable if you've been struggling to get good outputs.
The Zoom App
Same story.
Instead of pasting transcripts and asking:
"Can you summarize this meeting?"
The Zoom App already understands:
- this was a meeting
- there are speakers
- there are action items
- there are decisions
- there are follow-ups
It gives you a usable summary because the input is finally clear.
Again, not magic.
Just better framing.
And that's the point.
Apps don't make AI smarter, better or more functional. They make you better at using it.
If you're running a $5–20M business and AI has felt "meh" so far, it's probably because:
- you're giving it weak inputs
- you're not clear on what you want
- you're expecting it to read your mind
Apps quietly fix that by removing the blank page problem.
Now, important clarification.
If you already know how to:
- give strong context
- define outcomes
- communicate constraints
- iterate intelligently
You will outgrow Apps quickly.
They're not the endgame.
They're training wheels.
